What is Remote Notarization?
Remote notarization is a secure and legally recognized method of having your documents notarized without needing to meet a notary in person. Instead of driving to a location, you can complete the entire process virtually — through an online audio-video platform, from the comfort of your home, office, or even while traveling.
Remote notarization is designed to make the notary process more convenient, flexible, and accessible, especially for those with limited mobility, tight schedules, or long distances to travel.

Types of Remote Notarization
There are three main types of remote notarization, and it’s important to understand the difference between them — especially depending on where you're located and what type of document you're working with.

1. Remote Ink-Signed Notarization (RIN)
-
Most commonly used in Connecticut
-
The signer appears before the notary via real-time audio-video communication
-
The signer physically signs the document during the video session
-
The original wet-ink signed document is then sent to the notary by mail or delivery
-
The notary completes the notarization once they receive and confirm the document

2. Remote Online Notarization (RON)
-
Common in many other states, but less commonly used in Connecticut
-
Both the notary and signer interact entirely online, with electronic signatures and digital notary seals
-
Connecticut permits RON under specific statutory guidelines, and it’s not yet the primary remote option in-state

3. Electronic Notarization (eNotarization)
-
The document is signed electronically
-
Still requires the notary and signer to be physically present together
-
Only the method of signing is digital — this is not
According to the Connecticut Notary Public Manual (2023), Connecticut currently supports remote notarization under certain conditions, with the most common type being Remote Ink-Signed Notarization (RIN).
